Acid causes damage to natural stone, even when sealed! Bird droppings, leaves and berries are the main offenders

Sealers offer great protection for natural and concrete paving surfaces for items which get spilt or dropped onto them however exposure to acidic chemicals occuring in fruits, leaves or bird droppings will eventually burn through any sealer and mark the paving.

All paving types can be marked and stained which is why we recommend sealing them.

Our sealers offer great protection for natural stone and concrete paving surfaces from many substances that get spilt or dropped on them however exposure to acidic chemicals that occur in for example fruits, leaves and bird droppings will eventually burn through any sealer and mark the paving below.  This is why you often see buildings with metal netting to prevent birds roosting on them.

Our sealers still offer some protection but if anything acidic is sitting on the paving you must clear it up as soon as possible.  This is just the same as berries or bird droppings on a cars body work, if left too long it will take the colour out, even if just polished!

Berries, Leaves and Bird Poo 1

Acid from fallen berries, fruit, leaves and bird droppings that have been left on the paving, can stain paving and even penetrate sealed surfaces.

Often acid can react to naturally occurring iron deposits in stone, causing what looks like orange marks on the surface, this is in fact rust!

These stains can be difficult to remove and scrubbing alone is unlikely to help.  To try and remove these stains firstly, prevention is better than cure, ensure that any potential acidic material that falls onto the paving is removed as soon as possible, secondly to try and remove this staining you will need to use some cleaning products.  There are two that we produce, both are shown on our website and explain how they work in detail.

1.    EASY Masonry Revive, a powerful cleaner for masonry
2.    EASY4Rust which removes rust from natural stone, concrete and wood.

If these products do not work send our technical team photos of the staining, explain in detail what has caused them, what has been done to treat them, the type of paving laid, the jointing compound used and your contact details.  There is a chance our chemical experts will have a formula they can suggest to remove the marks from your patio – we will try and help where we can.
