Notes of Caution for applying EASYSeal in hot weather

Whilst the majority of our sealers can be used in temperatures of up to 30 degrees celcius, it's easy to forget that the stone can get significantly hotter than that particularly if they are a darker shade of colour.

The majority of our sealers can be used in temperatures up to 30 Degrees Celsius however it is important to remember that when the weather forecast says temperatures could get up to say 25 Degrees Celsius, it is the temperature in the shade not full sun they are recording!

Temperatures will get really hot on surfaces in the sun, particularly if the aspect is south facing and the paving is dark in colour.

The sealers in our EASYSeal range at Azpects work and actually work really well but only if the instructions are followed carefully.

Our technical team have had a handful of calls over the summer from customers who have tried to use an EASYSeal sealer on natural stone only to find they haven’t got the finish they wanted. We investigated these cases individually and in each instance it was found that whilst the outside temperatures on the day were between 22c - 28c the paving to be sealed was probably at 30c - 42c! The consequence of using a water based sealer on a very hot surface is simple to explain, the water evaporates quickly and the active ingredient within the sealer hasn’t got enough time to penetrate the surface of the stone properly, which gives a patchy finish.

When used correctly our sealers will provide the protection and finish to your paving that you want. They give long lasting protection to natural stone and concrete.  If a second coat is required, a water based sealer will require the additional application to be applied before the first coat has fully dried (wet on wet). Whilst this speeds up the entire sealing process generally, in warm or hot conditions it will happen significantly quicker. Once the first coat is dry you will not be able to apply a second coat for several months (once the surface has weathered enough to allow the second coat to impregnate the paving).  As soon as the sealer is dry it starts working.

We now have all the bottle instructions listed on our website, follow this link for more

We have been asked why do we recommend using water based sealers?  It’s simple they are better for the stone, water based sealers allow natural stone to breathe which means that any salts present in the stone can pass freely to the surface of the stone and can then be washed away.  There are other sealers on the market which can leave a ‘skin’ on the surface which can trap salts within natural stone causing a cloudy finish under the surface of the sealer - not nice, we actually have a product (EASY Sealer Remover) that removes this skin, such is the demand!  Using a water based sealer also means you can seal the stone before using a paving joint compound, such as EASYJoint, rather than waiting as long as six months with other types of sealers.

Azpects’ technical team are always happy to help and give free advice, the Azpects website also offers detailed information on all their products and our sealer chart will help you choose the correct sealer for your paving.
